Who they are
Camillo Golgi developed staining methods that made nerve-cell structures visible under the microscope. Santiago Ramón y Cajal used and modified those methods in his 1888 study of the bird cerebellum. Golgi’s place in this timeline is therefore a methodological contribution: an observational technique that enabled another researcher to investigate nervous-system organization.
He demonstrates how a new method of seeing can make a new biological explanation possible.
