Who they are

Charles Lyell helped bring Darwin and Wallace’s independently developed selection arguments before the Linnean Society. He and Joseph Dalton Hooker signed the covering letter and communicated the collected writings in 1858. His documented role in this entry concerns arranging and presenting the publication rather than authorship of either naturalist’s selection essay.

Lyell represents the people who helped new ideas enter the scientific record and negotiated how independent contributions would be presented.

The joint communication presents Darwin’s earlier extracts and Wallace’s independent essay on how natural selection can preserve variation. Lyell and Hooker’s covering letter explains how the separate contributions were brought together.
