Who they are
Didier Queloz and Michel Mayor reported radial-velocity measurements of 51 Pegasi that they interpreted as a Jupiter-mass planetary companion. Their 1995 paper made a planet around a Sun-like star a concrete observational result. The timeline uses the work to distinguish discovering another planetary system from establishing whether any planet supports life.
His measurements are a turning point in the history of testing whether planetary systems exist beyond the Solar System.

A Jupiter-mass companion to a solar-type star
Mayor and Queloz interpret regular changes in 51 Pegasi’s radial velocity as evidence for a Jupiter-mass companion. The paper helped establish planets around Sun-like stars as an observational research field.
