Who they are
Edward Arthur Milne was a mathematician and astrophysicist who studied how radiation passes through stellar atmospheres. Working with Ralph Fowler, he investigated absorption lines in stellar spectra. Cecilia Payne’s 1925 analysis drew on this theoretical background to connect observed spectra with physical conditions and composition in stars.
He represents the theoretical work behind the timeline’s stellar-composition milestone.

The Intensities of Absorption Lines in Stellar Spectra, and the Temperatures and Pressures in the Reversing Layers of Stars.: (Plates 15, 16.)
Fowler and E. A. Milne connect the strength of stellar absorption lines with temperatures and pressures in stellar atmospheres. The paper belongs to the theoretical groundwork Cecilia Payne later used to interpret stellar spectra.

Stellar Atmospheres: A Contribution to the Observational Study of High Temperature in the Reversing Layers of Stars
Payne uses stellar spectra and ionization theory to investigate stellar atmospheres and element abundances. Her text derives unusually large hydrogen and helium values while explicitly qualifying them, preserving the historical reasoning rather than only the later conclusion.
Original Harvard Observatory monograph, published under Cecilia H. Payne; linked Project Gutenberg transcription is later.
