Ines Fonfara

CRISPR–Cas9 research coauthor

Also known as I. Fonfara

Who they are

Ines Fonfara coauthored the 2012 study showing how RNA can guide Cas9 to cut selected DNA sequences. The paper connected a bacterial immune mechanism with the prospect of programmable genome editing. Her inclusion preserves the full research team’s credit; the byline alone does not identify which individual performed each experiment.

She is part of the molecular-biology development represented by the CRISPR milestone.

A programmable dual RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity

Jinek and colleagues explain RNA-guided Cas9 cleavage and test an engineered single guide against DNA in vitro. The paper presents programmable genome editing as a possible application, rather than an already demonstrated therapy.

Science article published online June 28, 2012; issue date August 17, 2012.

Reuses documented prior inspection: Specific mechanism, engineered-guide, conclusion and byline passages inspected; supplementary experiments not comprehensively reviewed. Reuses the input’s documented prior inspection: Specific mechanism, engineered-guide, conclusion and byline passages inspected; supplementary experiments not comprehensively reviewed. No fresh full-work reread in this directory pass. Fresh first-page byline, equal-contribution note, affiliations, abstract and repository metadata read; earlier documented mechanism/conclusion inspection reused. Supplements not audited.
