Who they are
Kenneth Arnold was a private pilot who reported seeing nine unusual objects near Mount Rainier on June 24, 1947. The National Archives places his report near the beginning of the postwar wave that prompted formal Air Force investigations. The enduring importance is the report’s public and institutional impact, independent of a settled explanation for what he saw.
He connects a widely reported personal observation with the rise of the modern UFO controversy.
