Who they are

Marie Curie worked with Pierre Curie and Gustave Bémont on the 1898 report identifying evidence for radium in pitchblende. The team combined chemical separation, activity measurements and spectroscopic evidence. Their report distinguished the proposed new substance from earlier polonium work while acknowledging that radium had not yet been obtained free of barium.

She appears in the sequence of discoveries that opened the study of atomic and nuclear processes.

On a New, Strongly Radio-active Substance Contained in Pitchblende

Pierre and Marie Curie with Gustave Bémont report a strongly radioactive fraction of pitchblende and propose radium as a new element. The report distinguishes chemical separation and Demarçay’s spectral evidence from isolation of a pure substance.

Report of December 26, 1898; Alfred Romer’s 1970 English translation hosted by AIP.

Documented connections

Documented · co authored with

Marie Curie and Pierre Curie are named co-authors, with Gustave Bémont, of the radium report.

The edge records report authorship; Demarçay’s spectroscopy and Bémont’s co-authorship remain separately credited.

Marie Curie and Gustave Bémont are named co-authors of the same radium report, alongside Pierre Curie.

This does not assign individual shares of experimental work or imply that the sample was pure radium.
