Martin Jinek

Molecular-biology researcher; CRISPR coauthor

Also known as M. Jinek

Who they are

Martin Jinek shares first-author credit with Krzysztof Chylinski on the 2012 programmable Cas9 paper. Its experiments showed how an engineered RNA guide could direct DNA cleavage. The work was a collaboration that also included Ines Fonfara, Michael Hauer, Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier.

He contributes to the genome-editing milestone through the original experimental paper.

A programmable dual RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity

Jinek and colleagues explain RNA-guided Cas9 cleavage and test an engineered single guide against DNA in vitro. The paper presents programmable genome editing as a possible application, rather than an already demonstrated therapy.

Science article published online June 28, 2012; issue date August 17, 2012.
