Mikhail Khomyakov
Sputnik 1 principal satellite designer
Who they are
Mikhail Khomyakov was Sputnik 1’s principal designer in James Harford’s account of the Soviet satellite effort. His responsibility was distinct from Sergei Korolev’s overall direction and Oleg Ivanovsky’s production and launch coordination. Including him gives the spacecraft’s design work a place within the history of the first artificial Earth satellite.
He is a specific engineering contributor to the Sputnik milestone.
