Who they are

Svante Pääbo was a corresponding coauthor of the international team’s 2010 draft Neanderthal genome study. The work recovered and compared ancient genetic material to examine relationships between Neanderthals and present-day humans. Its evidence for gene flow changed how interbreeding could be investigated, with conclusions dependent on the samples and methods actually used.

He connects laboratory recovery of ancient DNA with the timeline’s account of human ancestry.

A Draft Sequence of the Neandertal Genome

The international team compares a draft Neandertal genome with sampled present-day humans. Patterns in those comparisons support an inference of gene flow into ancestors of non-African populations.
